Northern House Mosquito

HOUSE MOSQUITO CONTROL YARDLEY PA

Are mosquito problems inevitable in Yardley? Species such as the northern house mosquito are so plentiful every summer that it can seem like it is impossible to escape them.

In some places, mosquito populations are so dense that it becomes distasteful to venture outdoors. The good news is that property owners do have choices when it comes to controlling northern house mosquitoes.

Typically, it makes sense to take several approaches to solving this problem. One of these is to eliminate any standing water on the premises. This can include repairing pavement to get rid of puddles, frequently changing the water in wading pools, filling in low points in the landscaping and taking brush piles to the dump. Even small amounts of standing water attract female mosquitoes looking to lay eggs. Consequently, minimizing the amount of water on the property can go a long way toward making it less attractive to mosquitoes.

Unfortunately, this is not always enough for getting rid of a northern house mosquito infestation. A pest management company may be the smartest and most effective solution for ensuring that mosquitoes are no longer a nuisance. Using specialized products, it is possible for exterminators to put a cap on northern house mosquito infestations.

WHAT HOUSE MOSQUITOES LOOK LIKE

Everything about the northern house mosquito is long and slender, including its legs and body. It is decorated with faint stripes that are created by the varying coloration of its minuscule scales. On the wings are microscopic hairs while the head is equipped with mouthparts that are designed to penetrate the skin of a host so that blood can be extracted.

WHERE DO HOUSE MOSQUITOES LIVE?

These pests are widely distributed across the top two-thirds of the U.S. Usually, they are most plentiful in places where people live and work because of the ready supply of food.

Water also attracts the northern house mosquito. This is because the female lays her eggs in water. Even small accumulations of water may serve this purpose. A stagnant lake or pond is ideal, but it also is possible to lay eggs in an upturned bottle cap, an unused tire, an empty flower pot or a bird bath that has not had its water changed in some time.

A clogged downspout or gutter, ditches and puddles all are bound to attract northern house mosquitoes. Eliminating clutter from around the property can discourage mosquito activity as can frequently changing the water in wading pools and bird baths.

DAMAGE CAUSED BY NORTHERN HOUSE MOSQUITOES

If they can manage it, northern house mosquitoes frequently come indoors. They are just as likely to infest commercial properties as residences as long as people are present. Unlikely to cause structural damage, the presence of northern house mosquitoes inside structures nonetheless indicates that there are unwanted openings in the exterior of the building that are making it possible for pests to enter.

WHAT DO HOUSE MOSQUITOES EAT?

This species' primary source of nutrition is blood, which typically is taken from mammals or vertebrates. People are the northern house mosquito's preferred host, but mammals and birds can be used for the same purpose. Females try to survive the winter by consuming an abundance of fruit juices, plant nectar and other sugary items. Accordingly, these pests are attracted to any human foods that might be sweet.

ARE HOUSE MOSQUITOES AGGRESSIVE?

These pests are prone to biting people multiple times in their quest for a meal. Accordingly, this is an aggressive species. This may be especially noticeable when the population of mosquitoes in one area is large. The more mosquitoes are present, the more blood meals are required. Adding to the problem is the rapid reproductive cycle of the mosquito. With eggs hatching quickly, the population can multiply within just a week or two.

DO HOUSE MOSQUITIOES CARRY DISEASE?

Itchy and annoying, most bites from northern house mosquitoes in Yardley are merely irritating. Occasionally, they can cause people to become ill.

As an example, northern house mosquitoes are recognized vectors for West Nile Virus. Infected birds transmit this virus to the mosquito, which then transmits the virus to a person with a bite. Some infected people will develop symptoms such as fatigue, vomiting, fever, headaches, muscle pain, diarrhea and rash, but others remain asymptomatic. If West Nile Virus is not properly treated, patients may develop seizures, tremors, paralysis and comas.

Some birds and reptiles are infected with a pathogen that can be transmitted to people via a mosquito bite. Once infected, people may develop a disease called Eastern Equine Encephalitis that has symptoms such as myalgia, vomiting, fever, headaches, chills and fever.

People who are bitten by an infected mosquito further may develop Saint Louis Encephalitis. Headaches, nausea, dizziness and fatigue are just a few of the symptoms that are associated with this illness.
