BEE CONTROL YARDLEY PA

Bees play a vital role in the ecosystem. This is why most reputable pest management companies do their utmost to relocate beneficial species such as the honey bee and the bumblebee. On the other hand, the carpenter bee and her nests usually are destroyed because of the potential for property damage.

WHERE BEES ARE FOUND

The various bee species all have preferred nesting locations. Honey bees tend to build nests in elevated locations. Holes in trees or convenient rock crevices frequently are used. These locations are out of the reach of most predators. Bumble bees look for dry, sheltered spots that are at ground level or even underground. An abandoned rodent tunnel is a convenient option, as is a ground-level void made by a fallen tree. Carpenter bees prefers to nest in dry, untreated wood. Trees are ideal for this purpose.

When they establish a nest close to human habitations, bees may choose a spot behind siding or in an attic or crawl space. Wood piles or yard debris provide other likely nest locations. Some bees will nest in the upper corners of porches, windows or doors. Carpenter bees will tunnel their way into any untreated wood, even if that wood is attached to or within a man-made structure.

WHAT BEES FEED ON

Bees feed on pollen for protein and other types of nutrients. Most of the pollen is used as food for bees that are in the  larvae stage. They also feed on nectar, which is a primary source of energy for the insects.

DAMAGE CAUSED BY BEES

Any species of bee may cause damage to a building if the nest is built on or in it. Nests placed behind siding, under roofing tiles or in wooden support beams are particularly dangerous. Doors, windows, eaves, decks, railings and fences all may sustain damage. The structure of the nest itself exerts pressures on the building. If the nest is abandoned but left intact, it may begin to rot, leading to mold and mildew issues. A large carpenter bee infestation may cause significant structural harm as the female tunnels into important construction components.

ARE BEES AGGRESSIVE?

Bumble bees tend to be among the less aggressive species of bees, but even they may sting when threatened. Honey bees and carpenter bees tend to be far more territorial, which leads to more attacks against people and pets. Although bees typically only can sting once, an entire colony may be incited to attack by the pheromones given off by one alarmed individual.

DO BEES CARRY DISEASE?

The bee species common to Yardley and throughout Pennsylvania are not known to transmit illnesses to humans. Nonetheless, the possibility of a medical emergency looms. Multiple stings can be dangerous even for someone who is not allergic. Someone with an allergy will require immediate medical attention.

HOW TO DETECT BEES

Indications of a bee problem include:

• An abundance of flying, buzzing insects appearing at outdoor meals

The following precautions should be taken to help reduce the risk of a bee issue:
