Asian Tiger Mosquito

ASIAN TIGER MOSQUITO CONTROL WARMINSTER PA

Asian tiger mosquitoes have become the subject of intense control measures. This is because this imported pest is a known carrier of many diseases, some of which can become life-threatening if they are not properly treated.

Unfortunately, control of this species is relatively complicated. Mosquitoes frequently are not affected by the spray treatments commonly available over the counter, allowing the population of this pest to persist unless more comprehensive control methods are exercised.

As such, an experienced pest management professional should be contacted if optimum protection against the Asian tiger mosquito is expected. Extensive training and experience empower an exterminator to address the various issues that contribute to a mosquito infestation. Because they correct the conditions on the property that are making it more susceptible to mosquitoes while also controlling the population, a professional pest control company is able to stop the infestation and make future mosquito problems less likely.

WHAT DO ASIAN TIGER MOSQUITOES LOOK LIKE?

This particular species is fairly easy to differentiate from other mosquito species because of the white stripe that adorns the center of the pest's back and head. Its mostly black body also features several white spots, including black and white striping on the legs. Males of the species have bushy antennae that make it possible for them to discern the female's distinctive buzz. At about one-eighth of an inch long, this is a fairly small pest.

WHERE DO ASIAN TIGER MOSQUITOES LIVE?

The Asian tiger mosquito can adapt to many different locations as long as food resources are available. Members of the species also look for places that are appropriate for reproduction. Both artificial and natural containers may serve as habitat.

Tires are the best-known habitat of choice for Asian tiger mosquitoes. In fact, the original infestation of these pests was brought to America in a shipment of tire casings. Adaptation has enabled the species to live and reproduce in litter, clogged gutters and bird baths among other receptacles.

Because they are not strong fliers, Asian tiger mosquitoes remain in the same geographic area for their entire life cycle. Accordingly, once a population of these pests is established, it will remain until steps are taken to eradicate them.

WHAT DO ASIAN TIGER MOSQUITOES EAT?

Both males and females feed primarily on plant juices and nectars that are rich in sugar. While males do not require blood meals, females do so that they can develop eggs. Capable of feeding on many species of mammals and birds, the female is an opportunistic feeder. She prefers mammals, but can feed on almost any other animal so that the species can survive in a variety of environments.

DO ASIAN TIGER MOSQUITOES  BITE?

Absolutely.

However, only female mosquitoes bite and draw blood from humans.  While both male and female mosquitoes possess similar mouthparts called proboscis, the biting apparatus of the female is thinner and better designed for stinging and drawing blood which necessary for egg production.

ARE ASIAN TIGER MOSQUITOES AGGRESSIVE?

People who have been bitten by tiger mosquitoes note that these bites actually may be less irritating than the bite of other mosquito species. Nonetheless, Asian tiger mosquitoes are notable for their determination. They will bite the same victim over and over, which can be extremely annoying. Moreover, some people do have an intense reaction to a single bite from an Asian tiger mosquito. This reaction may involve generalized inflammation and swelling.

DO ASIAN TIGER MOSQUITOES CARRY DISEASE?

At a minimum, Asian tiger mosquitoes are known to transmit dengue fever, Chikungunya, West Nile virus, Zika virus and Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or EEE.

Dengue fever may have symptoms that range from mild to severe. When the symptoms turn severe, the condition can become life-threatening within mere hours. The most common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, rash, general aches and pains and bloody stool.

Characterized by fever and joint pain, Chikungunya usually is manifested about three to seven days after the victim is bitten by an infected pest. Death is rare from this illness, but severe illness is not. Other symptoms may include a rash, swelling of the joints, muscle pain and persistent headache.

West Nile virus manifests no symptoms in most people who carry it. Other people develop symptoms like fever, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, headache and rash. More serious symptoms may affect the central nervous system and may result in the patient's death.

Similarly, people who are infected with Zika virus frequently show no symptoms. Those who do may have red eyes, joint pain, rash and mild fever. Abdominal pain, general discomfort and muscle pain are signs that immediate medical attention is needed.

The EEE virus is responsible for causing the brain infections known as encephalitis. Statistics suggest that 30 percent of people who are infected with the EEE virus die, and many of those who survive must contend with neurologic problems on a long-term basis.
