MOSQUITO CONTROL LANGHORNE PA

Mosquitoes are insects related to gnats and flies, undergoing the life stages of egg, larva, pupa, and adult.

Authorities estimate over 3,000 mosquito species worldwide, with about 200 in the U.S. and approximately 60 in our region.

The two most common mosquito types in Pennsylvania are the Northern House mosquito (Culex pipiens) and the Asian Tiger mosquito (Aedes albopictus).

  • Wings: 2

WHERE DO MOSQUITOES LIVE?

Mosquito resting habits vary, but they're commonly found in tall grass, weeds, and brush, often near homes, businesses, and other structures.

WHAT DO MOSQUITOES EAT?

Adult mosquitoes mainly feed on plant nectar or honeydew. Female mosquitoes require blood for protein to produce eggs.

DO MOSQUITOES BITE?

Yes, only female mosquitoes bite humans. Their proboscis is adapted for drawing blood, which is necessary for egg production.

ARE MOSQUITOES AGGRESSIVE?

Mosquito aggression varies by species, but they are generally considered aggressive towards people as most feed on both animals and humans.

DO MOSQUITOES CARRY DISEASE?

Yes. Mosquitoes are considered one of the deadliest insects due to their ability to transmit diseases, including malaria, West Nile virus, Rift Valley fever, Yellow fever, lymphatic filariasis, and encephalitis.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that nearly 800,000 people die annually from mosquito-borne diseases, primarily malaria.

Malaria was eradicated in the U.S. by 1951, mainly due to DDT. Currently, the U.S. has 1,500-2,000 cases yearly, mostly from travelers. Since 2002, there have been eight deaths from malaria in the U.S.

In the U.S., mosquitoes spread West Nile virus, LaCrosse encephalitis, Dengue fever, Chikungunya virus, and heartworm disease in dogs and cats.

HOW TO DETECT MOSQUITOES
