The ground sac spider is commonly found within homes and businesses throughout Pennsylvania and New Jersey.
Size: ¼ to 3/8 inches in length, including legs
Color: ground sac spiders can be red, orange, brown, tan, or grey.
Characteristics: The ground sac spider is very small, which makes detection difficult. Its front legs are much larger than other pairs. The abdomen is pale and slightly larger than the cephalothorax.
Sac spiders create silken tubes in which they nest during the day. They do not spin webs that are typical of spiders for catching and holding prey. Ground sac spiders hunt for their food, and can be found doing so beneath rocks, boards, and windowsills. They may be seen walking in shrubberies, foliage, and tall grasses. They are also commonly seen on the exterior of homes and buildings, specifically on the undersides of siding. Once temperatures drop, these spiders move into buildings.
The ground sac spider has a venomous bite that it uses to incapacitate its prey. Because of this, it can feast on larger spiders and insects. It commonly eats flies, crickets, roaches, and moths. It is also a scavenger. It can often be found feasting on dead spiders and insects.
The most significant damage caused by ground sac spiders is its bite. The spiders are very small, which makes them difficult to see, but also very aggressive. A human can threaten a ground sac spider with no intention, which regularly leads to painful bites.
The ground sac spider will aggressively protect its home and egg sac. These are usually located under boards, rocks, or on the siding of a building. The spider rarely builds its nest indoors, though it often moves indoors once temperatures cool. Female ground sac spiders produce about 50 offspring in one year.
The bites associated with ground sac spiders are no small matter. These bites are extremely painful. They can provoke an allergic reaction in individuals who have sensitivities to bee venom. Bites have been known to require medical care including hospitalization.
Ground sac spiders are most commonly seen in autumn when they begin to enter structures. Home and business owners may suspect that they have an infestation when they see the spider stalking prey. More commonly, they are detected by their tube-like homes. These spiders are also extremely aggressive and should also be suspected when spider bites are prevalent.
Regular cleaning can help to rid homes and businesses of the ground sac spider. However, because they are very small and difficult to find, the only way to truly prevent them is with regularly scheduled visits from a professional pest control expert. To help prevent agrarian-sac spiders from entering your home or business, Newtown Termite & Pest Control recommends the following measures:
• Keep indoors and outdoors tidy
• Clean and sweep ceilings, windowsills, and corners often
• Outdoor areas should be cleaned with a garden hose or power spray
A pest control expert will visit the home or business to conduct an inspection. At that time, a plan will be put into place to determine the best course of action for removing the ground sac spiders and ensuring they do not return. Only professionals should be trusted in ridding homes and businesses of these spiders as they are extremely aggressive and prolific breeders. Those who attempt to exterminate spiders on their own are not likely to see thorough and long-term results.
