WHAT DO TERMITES LOOK LIKE

Termites can look muck like a colony of ants with their pale tones and rectangular heads. In many cases, homeowners will miss identifying the species because they have similar comparisons to ants. However, there are a few distinct features that set them apart.

For example, an ant will have a curved antenna while termites are predominantly straighter. Furthermore, termites have the same-sized wings, while an ant will have more enormous wings in the front. Learning about the features of termites and what they look like is broken down into a few separate categories, workers, soldiers, and reproductive swarmers.

• WORKERS:

The termite worker is identified by having a small pale white color without wings. The termite workers look like ants but have softer bodies, and they comprise the majority of the colony. Their job in the colony is to gather food for the rest. There are a variety of termite worker species, and the termite workers function without visual sight and depend on the chemical scent from their glands in their chest.

On average, the termite worker is smaller than the soldiers or king and queen reproductive termite and is easily identified because they comprise the termite population. Homeowners will usually see a termite worker before any other termite shows itself because there are many of them, and they have many jobs and responsibilities for the rest of the colony.

• SOLDIERS:

These soldiers in a termite colony are similar to the workers but have larger heads. Like termite workers, the soldiers will have no sight, but they will use their large mandibles on their mouths to help defend the colony from outside influences. The heads on soldiers are elongated and more yellow than the termite workers, while the pinchers are darker in color.

Termite soldiers are relied upon to help guard the colony with their powerful jaws and short legs. In addition, termite soldiers are equipped with a sticky substance in their frontal gland that secretes out when they encounter danger or rush to the scene of invasion.

• REPRODUCTIVES:

In the termite colony, there are king and queen terminates. These are the termite reproductive members and are identified as the most significant members of the colony. Termite reproductive species will have the fastest identification features as they are the most mature members of the colony and will have wings.

Additionally, the king and queen termite reproductive members will be more dark brown in color as their job in the colony is to create, mate, and embellish the nesting sites for the rest of the colony. The termite reproductive members are also known as swarmers because of their two pairs of bigger wings than their body size.

The average length a termite reproductive member can grow to is about a ½ inch long. The only termite reproductive member that is larger than the rest is that of the queen.

HOW TERMITES GET INSIDE

It's estimated that one in three homes will have a termite infestation, especially in climatically elevated areas with the ideal humid environment. Most homeowners want to know how to prevent termites from getting inside because of the potential costly damage they can cause.

Termites are known to travel many miles to find the right location that suits their liking. Therefore, they will start to swarm during the termite season. Often it is easy to identify termites warm because many wings will fall off. When a colony establishes a new location, the swarm season allows termites to grow small short to fly to the new site. After arriving, the wings will fall off. A great way to identify if termites are getting inside is to see if there are wings around the property or if the swarm is near the house.

Termites enter a Bucks County home or office through small cracks because they are drawn to the warm and humid environment. In addition, the appeal of wood provides a food source to the termites, which makes it ideal to begin a nest for the colony. However, termites can use building materials to get into the home if the homeowner is doing reconstruction.

Often, many termites can weasel themselves through decks, fences, and uncleared bushes. The more moisture and wood surrounding a home will attract the termite, and since they can fit through the most minor cracks, inground or above ground, they are prone to finding their way in and making their way towards the home's foundation. Because termites are so small, sometimes a homeowner may not even identify an infestation until the red flags of damage have already begun.

DAMAGE CAUSED BY TERMITES

Termites can be beneficial when helping to break down dying plants in nature, but the damage they can cause to a home or business may not be irreversible. Termites are known to dwell beneath the soil and surround the areas of the house. They like to scurry in and out of wood surfaces, regardless of below or above the ground.

The damage termites can create can cause cracks in walls and foundations and wood-hollowing out the structure of a home. The most common damage caused by termites is wood damage; however, termites can damage walls and furniture and cause floors and ceilings to begin to sag.
