Bed Bugs

BED BUG CONTROL BUCKS COUNTY PA

Bed bugs have been featured in the media several times in recent years as wave after wave of outbreaks hit American cities. Homes and businesses in Bucks County have not been immune to the problem, as calls for bed bug control have spiked.

WHAT DO BED BUGS LOOK LIKE?

Bed bugs are small. Adults only measure about one-quarter of an inch long, which is one of the reasons why they often are hard to find. Before they feed, they are a mahogany brown, and their bodies are wide, flat ovals. Feeding turns them a reddish brown, and their bodies become longer and rounder when they are engorged. Like other insects, they have six legs and a pair of antennae.

WHAT DO BED BUGS EAT?

Bed bugs exist solely on a diet of blood. Typically, they venture out at night to seek a meal. When infestations are particularly heavy, they also may feed during the day. This pest latches onto a host for five to 10 minutes to feed. After this, they do not need to eat for another five to 10 days. There are stories of bed bugs surviving for months or almost a year without a meal.

WHERE DO BED BUGS HIDE?

Bed bugs are extremely good at hiding. This, coupled with the fact that some people do not have a noticeable reaction to bed bug bites, means that an infestation can go on for prolonged times without being noticed.

Bed bugs secrete themselves in the seams and piping of mattresses. They hide in the folds and seams of bed covers and can be discovered on the wall behind the mattress and box spring. People have found bed bugs behind art work on walls and living behind baseboards. They may make a home in light fixtures or behind the plates on light switches and electrical outlets. The crevices in furniture are good places to locate them as are the floor and seats in cars. Temporary shelter may be found in bags, backpacks, purses and suitcases.

Bed bugs are frequently found in homes. Other places where they may be discovered include hotel rooms, laundromats, buses and other public transportation and offices.

DAMAGE CAUSED BY BED BUGS

Unlike other pests, bed bugs do not cause structural damage to property. Nonetheless, the Environmental Protection Agency has called them a "public health pest."

ARE BED BUGS AGGRESSIVE?

Yes.

Bed bugs are aggressive in that humans are most often the preferred host of bed bugs.

DO BED BUGS CARRY DISEASE?

Although bed bugs are distasteful, they are not known to spread disease. Some people have a more severe reaction to the bed bug's bite, which can include allergic reactions to bites and secondary reactions when the bites become infected. Perhaps the most grievous damage is to the mental and emotional health of individuals who are living with a bed bug infestation. Reactions such as anxiety and insomnia frequently are reported.

HOW TO DETECT BED BUGS

Signs of a bed bug presence include:

• Shed skins or exoskeletons on beds, floors and other surfaces
• Tiny blood stains on sheets, pillowcases and pajamas
• Unexplained dark brown or black stains that may be bed bug feces
• Raised, red, itchy spots on the skin that are left behind from the bed bug's bite

HOW TO PREVENT BED BUGS

To help project against a bed bug infestation the following steps should be taken:

• Eliminate clutter in every room to minimize the number of bed bug hiding spots
• Carefully inspect second-hand furniture and clothing for signs of an infestation
• Examine suitcases and bags for signs of bed bugs before bringing them home
• Check car upholstery and rugs for bed bugs that may cling to clothing or other items that are brought into the house
• Frequently vacuum all floors
• Cover mattresses and box springs with encasements to keep bed bugs out
• Seal cracks and holes in drywall, baseboards and light fixtures to isolate infestations
• Carefully inspect all items brought back from a laundromat or other shared laundry facility

PROVEN BED BUG CONTROL EFFECTIVENESS

Although technological advances have been made in the fight against bed bugs, conventional bed bug extermination methods still prove to be among the most effective in eradicating infestations for several key reasons.

Firstly, the conventional bed bug method utilizes a crack and crevice treatment process designed to eradicate bed bugs in places most other treatment methods are not able to penetrate.

Secondly, the standard method for bed bug extermination employs the use of materials that not only kill existing bed bugs, but offer residual protection against future infestations.
